Involvement of the Central Nervous System may occur in a subset of HIV-infected patients, with concomittant cognitive dysfunction. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis may reveal a number of abnormalities in such cases:

- Increased cell number (in particular lymfocytes)
- Intrathecal immunoglobulin production
- Increased neopterin concentration (as a conseuqnce of actication of cells from the monocyte lineage)

Our laboratory offers fast and efficient analysis of the following compounds in CSF for the diagnosis of Neuro-lues:

- Routine CSF analysis (cell count & differentiation), glucose, lactate, total protein
-Oligoclonal IgG bands by iso-electric focussing & immundetection (requires both CSF and serum analysis)
- Quantitative intrathecal synthesis of IgG, IgA and IgM (requires both CSF and serum analysis, also of albumin)
